LECA

Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate

Directions for use:

  1. Rinse LECA first
Pour the clay pebbles into a strainer and rinse them well with water to remove dust until water turns clear.

  2. Soak the LECA
Let the LECA sit in water for a few hours or overnight so the clay balls can absorb moisture. You may also boil LECA for double coverage to ensure cleanliness. **Always boil before reuse**

  3. Choose how you want to use it
You can use LECA on top of soil, mix it into soil for better drainage, or use it as the main growing medium for certain plants. This can be a permanent base or for propagation.

  4. For soil topping
Place a thin layer of LECA on top of the soil to help keep things neat and reduce soil splash when watering.

  5. For mixing into soil
Add a small amount of LECA into your potting mix to help create more airflow and drainage around the roots.

  6. For growing in LECA only
Gently remove old soil from the plant’s roots, rinse the roots carefully, place LECA in the pot, add the plant, then fill around the roots with more LECA.

  7. Add filtered water
If using LECA only, keep a small amount of water at the bottom of the container so the pebbles can pull moisture up to the roots. Do not cover all the roots or pebbles in water.

  8. Check the plant often
Watch for signs of stress while the plant adjusts. Some plants need time to get used to growing in LECA.

  9. Add fertilizer that is formulated for water use

LECA alone does not have the same nutrients soil has, it is essential to keep your water clean and nourished for healthy growth.

LECA stands for Lightweight Expanded Clay Aggregate. These small clay pebbles help support healthy root growth by creating airflow around plant roots while holding moisture for the plant to use as needed.

LECA can be used as a soil topper, mixed into potting blends for extra drainage, or used as a growing medium for certain houseplants. Before using, rinse thoroughly to remove dust. For best results, keep LECA slightly moist but avoid letting plants sit in stagnant water unless using a proper semi-hydro setup.

Perfect for plant parents who want better drainage, less compacted soil, and a cleaner way to support root growth.
