🌞 Beginner-Friendly Summer Gardens:

What to Grow (and How to Keep It Simple)

Summer gardening is my FAVORITEEEEE time of the year.

Everything feels alive — longer days, warmer soil, and that quiet excitement that comes from watching something grow because you showed up for it. Whether this is your very first garden or just your first time trying again, summer is the perfect season to begin.

Now before we begin, listen! You don’t need fancy tools, perfect soil, or years of experience. Things will come to you as you go.

You just need sunlight, patience, and a willingness to learn.

Alright - Let’s keep this simple.

🌱 The Best Beginner Summer Plants

These are forgiving, productive, and grow well in containers or garden beds:

🍅 Tomatoes

Fast growing, high reward. Cherry varieties are especially beginner-friendly.

Needs:
• Full sun (6–8 hours)
• Consistent watering
• A cage or stake

🌶 Peppers

Bell or sweet peppers are easy starters.

Needs:
• Warm soil
• Full sun
• Light feeding every few weeks

🥒 Cucumbers

Quick growers that love to climb - they NEED something to climb. I used a baby gate when I first started... lol

Needs:
• Plenty of water
• Trellis or fence
• Harvest often

🥬 Lettuce/Greens

Perfect for small spaces and fast results.

Needs:
• Partial shade in hot weather
• Frequent harvesting

🌿 Basil

One of the easiest herbs to grow — and one of my favorites to grow alongside tomatoes. Make sure. you do your research on what can be potted next to eachother. (Especially Herbs)

Needs:
• Sun
• Regular trimming
• Well-draining soil

🪴Container Gardening!

Perfect for Beginners

No yard? No problem. I started with lowes buckets, and simply drilled holes in them. Hey, it worked!

Most summer veggies grow beautifully in pots.

All. You. Need:

✔ Containers with drainage holes
✔ Potting soil (not garden dirt)
✔ Sunlight
✔ Water

Bonus: Tomatoes, peppers, basil, and lettuce all thrive in containers.

Bonus x2: containers let you move plants if the sun gets too intense.

💧 Simple Summer Care Tips

Water in the Morning

Helps prevent disease and keeps plants hydrated through heat.

Mulch the Soil- Use Green Threshold's Organic Mix

Keeps moisture in and roots cool.

Feed Lightly

A gentle fertilizer every 2–3 weeks is plenty.

Harvest Often

Picking encourages more growth. Yes... Really!

🐛 Don’t Panic About Pests!

Every garden gets visitors. Some of them, actually benefit our garden.

Instead of chemicals, try:

Rinsing leaves with water
• Removing bugs by hand
• Neem oil or gentle plant sprays
• Encouraging beneficial insects

A few holes in leaves mean your garden is still alive.

🌻 Beginner Gardening Mindset

Plants don’t expect perfection.

They respond to consistency.

Some days you’ll forget to water.
Some plants won’t make it.
That’s normal.

Gardening teaches patience, presence, and resilience — and every season gets easier.

🌿 Let's wrap this up, and head outside!

Summer is my favorite time of the year because it reminds me how simple growth really is.

Your first garden doesn’t need to be big.

It just needs to begin.

One tomato plant.
One basil pot.
One quiet moment outside.

That’s how every garden starts.
